Healthcare System

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) seeks a dynamic and strategic revenue cycle leader for the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine (the Department). The Executive Director will be responsible for the day to day operations of the anesthesia professional billing services company (AFS) and will contribute to the strategic planning process and execution of strategic and financial goals for the Department and AFS. The ideal candidate will be a strong leader who is self-motivated and a great communicator. The Department has significant growth potential as they expand their services further into the Beth Israel Deaconess Health System network and the ED will play a critical role in the expansion of services.

This role reports to the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) of the Department of Anesthesia. In conjunction with the CAO, and in accordance with HMFP policy, the ED is accountable to the HMFP CFO to ensure that AFS operates in compliance with HMFP’s Financial Covenants and Policies and Procedures.

There are three direct reports and 22 indirect reports. The annual collected revenue for the department is currently $44m. Key responsibilities include:

Revenue Cycle and Financial Oversight

  • Oversee the AFS monthly close process.  Provide timely and accurate reporting, and regular informative updates, to the Department and HMFP regarding interim and period performance or issues related to AFS.
  • Oversee the development of the AFS operating budget and provides regular updates of the actual versus budget operating results as requested by the Department and HMFP.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership, management and strategic guidance for AFS and the revenue cycle services provided by AFS, including coding, charge entry, billing, accounts receivable management, denials management, bad debt, payment posting and reconciliation and other related services and functions.
  • Oversee the use of the AFS billing system and related technology to ensure that systems and technology are properly implemented for effective use by AFS and deployed in a manner that is relevant to the current needs of AFS and that meets the then current needs and priorities of AFS and the Department.

Leadership

  • Provide consultative support, input and guidance as needed to implement leading practices in the front-end related processes including patient access, registration, insurance verification and other related functions of offices or clinics that are directly managed by the Department of Anesthesia or pertaining to front-end functions administered by hospital staff for patients of the Department’s providers.
  • Provide oversight, consultative support and guidance for development of education, training and orientation of new providers, and ongoing education and training for all providers on the revenue cycle, coding and front-end related processes.
  • As needed, investigate and implement, where appropriate, operational improvements and technological advancements that will support leading practice revenue cycle services and achievement of operational performance goals of AFS and the Department.
  • Establish processes and procedures to ensure that AFS maintains a current and compliant understanding of revenue cycle related requirements defined by applicable regulatory agencies, third-party payers, and other entities that govern the rules related to revenue cycle related functions and initiate changes in process as needed to maintain compliance.
  • Evaluate work performance and productivity of managers and staff and provide timely and consistent feedback.

Reporting

  • Responsible for the timely measurement and effectiveness of all revenue cycle related processes internal and external.
  • Establish leading practice measures to monitor AFS operational performance and provides timely, accurate, and complete reports on the operating measures and financial performance of AFS.
  • Ensure that timely and relevant reporting of financial and operational performance results of the revenue cycle services is provided to the Department and HMFP.
  • Responsible for ensuring that services provided for AFS by vendors and sub-contractors are appropriately governed by applicable agreements which are approved in accordance with HMFP policies and that such services are consistent with leading industry practices with regard to results, fees and other appropriate measures.

THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant experience in related field such as Healthcare, Business, Finance, Accounting or related field.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in a financial leadership role and demonstrated experience in a leadership role in physician and/or hospital revenue cycle management.
  • Thinks strategically; develops and operationalizes plans in accordance with the organization’s mission.
  • Strong revenue cycle subject matter expertise.
  • Exhibits strong executive presence, written and verbal communications skills.
  • Must be able to work well in team-focused environment and communicate well with physicians and executive leadership.
  • Flexible and able to act as a change agent in a collegial and collaborative manner.
  • Anticipates needs, responds quickly, provides guidance and support, monitors and follows up as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in related field such as Healthcare, Business, Finance, Accounting or related field.
  • Demonstrated experience with physician and hospital revenue cycle and billing requirements for Anesthesia and Pain Management services.
  • Eight (8) to Ten (10) years of experience in a financial leadership role and demonstrated experience in a leadership role in physician revenue cycle management.

Exhibits knowledge and skills indicating capabilities to develop strong working relationships with other key executives and managers within the Department and HMFP.
