Top 10 Positions LFT Is Asked to Fill

For each of the last three years, I have presented in our newsletter a list of the top 10 positions for which we are requested to do searches. We get a lot of feedback on these particular newsletters. I guess people like top 10 lists. So here we go for 2017…

Top 10 Positions LFT Is Asked to Fill

  1. Finance/Accounting Staff
  2. Service Line Clinical Directors (cardiology, GI, OB/GYN, oncology, orthopedics, etc.)
  3. Service Line Clinical Managers
  4. Periop
  5. CNO
  6. CFO
  7. ICU
  8. HR
  9. Practice Management
  10. Quality & Risk Management

There have been some notable shifts in demand this year versus previous years. First, you will see the presence of finance people on the list (Finance/Accounting staff #1, CFO #6). This is a significant jump – finance and accounting staff were not even in the top 10 last time around. Think some hospitals are worrying about their bottom line?

The second point worth noticing is the rapid growth in Service Line Clinical Managers, which also didn’t make the top 10 last year. In an effort to reduce expenses, many hospitals are increasingly looking to have nurse managers do the jobs previously handled by clinical directors. This is showing up in their search requests. With the exception of periop director, clinical managers are the most challenging searches we do.

Finally, HR has also never before made our top 10 list – so this is a noticeable event. In an environment where high employee turnover and visible talent shortages co-exist with layoffs and union strikes, HR is becoming a more and more demanding place to work. Burnout is increasing, as is the desire for hospitals to find fresh new HR leadership. We do not expect the frequency of requests for the HR searches will slow anytime soon.

Hope everyone is enjoying the fall foliage and the World Series. As always, if we can help in any way, please give us a call.
